Honu Tiki Bowls | Light & Bright

Honu Tiki Bowls serves fresh, healthy Hawaiian-inspired bowls with regional ingredients.

Only open since June, Vienna’s first Hawaiian bistro, Honu Tiki Bowls, already has a reputation for long waiting lines. “I didn’t even think that people here were so hungry for something new,” notes 30-year-old Viennese native and owner Kaspar Kunz, a graduate of Vienna’s Tourism College Modul. He was inspired by a Hawaiian-style bistro while working in Germany and brought the idea to his hometown. “I always knew I wanted to come back to Vienna. It was just a perfect time.”

Named after the lucky Hawaiian symbol of the sea turtle, Honu specializes in “Tiki” bowls: inspired by traditional Hawaiian cuisine, they’re healthy, easy to eat and a great alternative to a greasy lunch. Its proximity to the university and numerous offices draws myriad students and the business crowd. “Mainly women,” drawn by the trendy fare, admits Kunz. The colorful interior quickly made it a favorite among bloggers, featuring tropical accents like palm leaves hanging from the ceiling and bright surfboards on the walls.

Carefully developed with the help of two chefs from Hamburg, each bowl has a different flavor, containing various combinations of locally grown vegetables, homemade dressings, meat or raw fish. “That means it’s never boring,” Kunz assures.
