Event Details

A strong thread of celtic culture runs through Vienna. In the 12th Century, travelling monks from Ireland and Scotland were invited to Vienna by Heinrich III. The monks became known in German as “Schotten” or “Iroschotten” – founding the Schottenstift and Schottenklöster, and playing a major role in education and learning, including the early development of the University of Vienna.

Schottenfest is a new cultural festival that celebrates the links between Ireland, Scotland and Austria, and through concerts and presentations aims to create a forum for learning, creativity and integration in the spirit of the Gaelic monks centuries ago.

Special guests include the Irish singer-songwriters Mick Flannery and John Spillane.
