Off-Broadway Hit “Guards at the Taj” Arrives in Vienna

The Vienna Theatre Project produces Rajiv Joseph’s off-Broadway hit.

Once again proving their knack for bringing contemporary English-language theater to the city, Joanna Godwin-Seidl’s Vienna Theatre Project adds another continental European premier to its list: Guards at the Taj, by the Tony and Pulitzer-nominated Indian-American playwright Rajiv Joseph. Based on some of the numerous legends surrounding the mausoleum, Joseph approaches the edifice in a manner reminiscent of Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead or Beckett’s Waiting for Godot – the two titular guards are the sole protagonists, ordered to watch over the building site as it nears completion and forbidden to talk or even cast their eyes upon the unfinished project. As they’re given an unthinkable order, both begin questioning power and beauty, their inner turmoil mirroring issues relevant today.
