I, Tonya Recounts Harding’s Life and Career, Leaving Judgment up to You

The bitter fall of one of figure skating’s biggest stars relives one of sport’s most infamous scandals.

With black humor and sequined costumes, I, Tonya revives the lurid true story of American figure skater Tonya Harding, only the second woman to complete a triple axel in competition. However, she is far better known today for her fierce rivalry with fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan, which culminated in an attack on Kerrigan by Harding’s ex-husband just before the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer.

Hot-headed and abrasive, Tonya Harding was a divisive figure even before the scandal, resulting in a tabloid frenzy once she became connected to the attack. While Harding has consistently denied any involvement and her guilt was never proven, the court of public opinion soundly condemned her, demonizing Harding and squarely siding with “America’s Sweetheart” Kerrigan – especially after Kerrigan nabbed silver at Lillehammer ahead of Harding’s 8th place.

Screenwriter and producer Steven Rogers (Stepmom, Kate & Leopold) revisits the 1990s and recounts Harding ́s life and career from her own (unreliable) perspective, leaving it up to the audience to decide what really happened.

Starring top contenders for Academy Awards like Margot Robbie as Harding and Allison Janney as her cold-hearted mother, I, Tonya combines a thrilling story with scalding satire, taking a good, hard look at America’s obsession with sports, sensationalism, celebrity and winners.
