Kris Kristofferson and CeeLo Green Headline Jazz Fest Wien

Vienna’s annual jazz summer presents international stars and local talent.

As orchestras go on tour and Vienna’s major concert halls take a well-deserved Sommerpause (summer break), the smooth tones of the Jazz Fest Wien move in to fill the silence. The international jazz festival has become a household name in Vienna’s cultural landscape: attracting roughly 60,000 visitors each year, its 28th edition brings giants such as the legendary Nashville rebel Kris Kristofferson or Grammy winners like vocalist CeeLo Green of Gnarls Barkley fame and English singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae, whose relaxed and soulful sound has topped the charts in the UK.

Also appearing is Dutch singer Caro Emerald, a jazz diva pur sang. After getting her big break standing in for a sick bandmate to record her breakout song “Back It Up”, she quickly made it to No. 1 in the Austrian charts with the 2009 hit “A Night Like This.” Exuberant and melancholy, her music is a throwback to the 1940s,  incorporating tango and mambo influences to enchant lucky audiences.

Vienna’s own music scene makes its fair share of contributions. The Vienna-based Bataclana Quintet, with members from Serbia, Romania, Spain and Slovenia, use their solid foundation in classical music to reinterpret Argentinian master Astor Piazzolla’s jazzy tango vibes. Viennese hero Harri Stojka of the city’s famous Roma music dynasty performs the distinct European genre of “gypsy jazz” with fastidious ingenuity and technical brilliance. And local soul combo 5/8erl in Ehr’n euphorically celebrates melancholy as part of the Wien Energie Open Air, which also features the Afro-Cuban All Stars and Count Basic.

Tickets for each concert are available separately. With established and upcoming artists and select performances available for a modest fee, the Jazz Fest has something for everyone, ensuring that this summer won’t be a quiet one.
