A plethora of genres and styles define this venerable festival.

Attracting household names and promising newcomers from contemporary jazz as well as ambassadors of soul, pop and rock, the Jazz Fest Wien is a fixture in the city’s cultural calendar, thanks in part to spectacular locations like the Staatsoper and City Hall. A prestigious stop on the international summer circuit since kicking off with legends like Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie in 1991, this year features numerous highlights like jazz diva (and godchild of Quincy Jones and Dinah Washington) Patti Austin, who will pay tribute to Ella Fitzgerald on her 100th birthday. Other prominent acts include the celebrated Italian composer and pianist Ludovico Einaudi, Norwegian saxophone phenom Jan Garbarek (pictured) and fusion hero George Benson; the legendary Herbie Hancock will also return after several appearances in the past.

A younger generation will take the stage at Vienna’s jazz club Porgy & Bess, like Tyrolian piano prodigy Jakob Zimmerman, who already leads his own trio at merely 17 years old. Others in the lineup are experimental drummer Ollie Howell, Grammy-nominated saxophonist Ben Wendel, and British vocalist Polly Gibbons. During free Sunday matinees, the Rathausplatz will resound with the infectious swing of the Hot Jazz Ambassadors and Eddie’s Swing Cats. As every year, tickets go fast so get them soon!
