An impressive line-up of big names in venerable venues await

Going strong since 1991, this major date on the summer festival circuit starts right as most classical venues close for the summer,  drawing world-class talent by  the prospect of playing in locations like the Staatsoper, Musikverein or the Rathaus itself. As with other famed Jazz festivals such as Montreaux, the term is often interpreted rather broadly, with this year featuring ’80s pop starlet Cyndi Lauper (now a blues singer), British singer-songwriter Jamie Cullum, American rocker Beth Hart and crooner legend Burt Bacharach playing the Staatsoper alongside more conventional jazzmen like the trio of John Scofield, Brad Mehldau and Mark Guiliana, who will improvise based on the Mehldau/Guiliana album Mehliana – Taming the Dragon.

Other notable acts are the fusion guitarist John McLaughlin backed by his band The 4th Dimension, the godfather of P-Funk George Clinton with Parliament Funkadelic and Grammy-winning Snarky Puppy (all at Rathaus).

In addition, legendary pianist Keith Jarrett will return for a rare solo performance at the Musikverein.

Smaller venues feature more intimate settings with equally skilled musicians such as shooting star saxophonist Kamasi Washington, the Viennese all-female cello quartet eXtracello, or the Swing band of Scott Hamilton and Dan Barrett. 13-year-old piano prodigy Joey Alexander performs in a trio at Porgy & Bess.

Get your tickets soon, they sell out quickly.
