As the pandemic winds down and television production ramps up, this summer sees a cavalcade of quality programming, including the return of an animated icon, a long-awaited spinoff of a beloved Marvel antihero, a star-studded musical parody, the next chapter in a hit French series and a Canadian cult comedy coming to Austrian streaming services.
Suspense: Lupin
Netflix’s most popular show this year (so far), this French re-imagining of the legendary master thief Arséne Lupin, stars the inimitable Omar Sy (Intouchables) as a master thief with Migrationshintergrund seeking vengeance on the powerful Hubert Pellegrini by exposing his crimes in a series of extravagant heists. With all of Paris hunting him, he must utilize all his skill, charisma and pre-existing stereotypes against immigrants to evade capture and get his revenge. Season 2 streams Jun 11 on Netflix
Anime: Sailor Moon Eternal
The latest pop cultural phenomenon to jump from the ’90s back into the collective unconscious, the Japanese anime classic returns to the big screen as a double feature, continuing the 2014 reboot, Sailor Moon Crystal. With the plot taken from the Dream arc of the original manga, Usagi Tsukino and friends transform once again into pretty guardians to battle for love and justice – in the name of the moon, someone’s about to get punished. Musical: Schmigadoon!

An affectionate parody featuring a star-studded comedy cast led by Cecily Strong (SNL) and Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele), this fantasy has a couple stumble upon a magical town trapped in a 1940s musical, unable to leave until they find “true love.” Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and executive produced by Lorne Michaels, it also features Alan Cumming and Fred Armisen, with the legendary Martin Short guest starring. Comedy: Schitt’s Creek

Part Twin Peaks, part Spinal Tap, this hit comedy created by Eugene and Dan Levy has finally made its way to Austria: Featuring a rich and spoiled family falling on hard times and forced to move into the eponymous town that they previously bought as a joke, this fish-out-of-water story has garnered two Golden Globes and nine Emmys over its run. Action: Loki

Marvel’s most lovable villain gets his own spinoff show, with Michael Waldron (Rick & Morty) writing and Tom Hiddleston reprising his iconic role! Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, an alternate version of Loki is imprisoned by the Kafkaesque “Time Variance Authority,” and forced to repair timelines under the watchful eyes of Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson); naturally, things go awry, and the Norse god of mischief is soon cheerfully backstabbing and scheming his way through the space-time continuum. Streams Jun 9 on Disney+
