Two expat dancers, Stephanie Cumming and Katarina Meves warm up for Impulstanz in the Painting 2.0 exhibit at Mumok
Stephanie Cumming moved to Vienna from Canada. “I wanted to be in Europe,” she explained. She reached Vienna in 2001, dancing at Tanzhotel and teaching English. She joined Chris Haring’s dance troupe Liquid Loft in 2003. Vienna is “easy,” she said “It’s not too big but there’s always something happening. Her career has also moved into Austrian film. She starred in Gustav Deutsch’s Shirley – Visions of Reality and most recently in WinWin directed by Daniel Hoesl.
Katarina Meves splits her time between Vienna and Berlin and said it makes her “a little schizophrenic.” She loves the structure and calm of Vienna, since Berlin can be exhausting, but the switches can be stimulating. She values how her relationship with dance has changed since she joined Liquid Loft in 2006. “It’s about using your strengths and weaknesses, but also respecting them.”
Liquid Loft will be performing at Impulstanz, the festival Meves calls a playground for dancers.
