Since Metropole published our review in August, praise and accolades for Keith Gray’s The Climbers have only grown. Recently, Nicolette Jones, the Children’s Books Editor for The Times, named it as one of the best books for children in 2021, with Jones stating “Gray is a fine author for young adults, with an understanding of teenagers that rings true”. Earlier this summer, it was named The Sunday Times children’s book of the week, stating it “demonstrates that a book that is brief and written in simple language can still be profound”.
“Being on the list is a special honor,” Gray said, over coffee at Cafe Pic in Vienna’s 1st district. “I am very excited that a book specifically aimed at reluctant and struggling readers has resonated with capable readers too.” A heartfelt and heartwarming book, The Climbers was recognized for its deftness and insight at capturing the struggles of growing up and the rewards of reaching out.
