Mike Rutherford was guitarist and one of the founding members of British rock band Genesis, before its breakdown and the arrival of The Mechanics. The subsequent group, dropping off chart-topping singles en route like “Looking Back Over My Shoulder”, has seen a number of its parts come and go, and today, while there’s a lot of mileage on the clock, it’s a well-oiled machine.

All this month and until the middle of October, the good folk up there at the Film Museum are showing a retrospective of one of America’s acting greats, Henry Fonda. This Saturday the cowboy classic Once Upon a Time in the West will be screened, preceded by You Only Live Once, directed by Fritz Lang in the Viennese director’s second foray into Hollywood.

Filmcasino celebrates the 50 year anniversary of The Beatles’ seminal LP, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, with two weeks of films about the band. One of the best known, alongside Help!, was A Hard Day’s Night. The Fab Four take London by storm in this comedy, shot at the height of Beatlemania.

10.9 WINWIN

All this month, the installation PARK made by Team Wien will be situated on Naschmarkt. Together with Kino am Naschmarkt the collective have chosen a series of films that ask questions about society, wealth and work ideals. The film shown on Sunday will be the brilliant WINWIN by Austrian filmmaker, Daniel Hoesl.

6.9 JEDER FINDET SEINE ILLUSION

The Brazilian-born artist Sayomi Urlichs largely uses acrylic and oil paints to create these expressive and striking pieces. The title of the exhibition means Everyone can find their illusion, acknowledging that each work is manipulated by the eye of the viewer.

7.9 PIETER BRUEGEL: DRAWING THE WORLD

Dutch Renaissance artist Bruegel had a sharp eye and a remarkable gift for eliciting the social conditions of his 16th Century surroundings. His works remain highly original for their depth of insight and wit. Here, the Albertina has collated 100 of the artist’s drawn works, placing them alongside pieces from predecessors such as Hieronymus Bosch and Albrecht Dürer for context.

7.9 DEJAN DUKIC: TRAPPED IN FURS

Dejan Dukic paints from the back! In his first solo show you’ll see the pieces that are made by kneeding colors through the pores of the canvas. His work was shaped by travels to China and Thailand, before returning to develop back in Styria and Vienna. The results are impressive, becoming terrain maps of totally foreign lands.
