Wes Anderson Pulls Out All the Stops with ‘Isle of Dogs’

Wes Anderson returns with a charming, stop-motion tale of friendship and adventure

Hope in the face of injustice can come from unexpected sources. In Isle of Dogs, Wes Anderson’s second stop-motion feature after 2009’s Fantastic Mr. Fox, it comes from 12-year-old Atari and a pack of abandoned, yet independent-minded, mutts. Following an executive order exiling all canines to “Trash Island,” Atari is distraught but determined to reunite with his beloved pet, Spots. He sets out and with the help of the pack – voiced by Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton and Bill Murray, among others – uncovers darker conspiracies the farther they go.

Set in near-future Japan, the star-studded film pays homage to the likes of Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, drawing inspiration from his urban elegies of corruption, truth, nobility and heroism. Anderson displays an eagle eye for details in the production design, using dynamic cinematography to draw viewers into his world.

Embellished with a full roster of colorful character models and quirky one-liners, much-needed hilarity is added to the otherwise melancholy subjects of animal cruelty, marginalization and abandonment. Despite its serious undertones, the bittersweet comedic adventure remains steadfastly focused on the uncomplicated friendship between a boy and his dog, showing heroes come in all breeds and sizes.
